Decorating your apartment home to transform it into a winter wonderland is one of the most exciting times of the year. It’s the perfect time to make your home cozy and festive! But it’s important to make sure your decorations are safe. Be mindful of items that could potentially cause damage to your home — we’re giving you some dos and don’ts to keep in mind this season.

Candles.

Do: Check your lease agreement. Open flame candles are now prohibited in many apartment communities. Though candles are one of the most popular home decor items, they can be one of the most dangerous. Scented candles may also leave soot marks on wall and ceiling paints inadvertently.

Do: Use battery operated faux flames. Sticking with battery operated faux candles reduces the risk of fire while still giving that warm feel of real candles.

Space heaters.

Do: Make sure that if you purchase one, it’s high quality and placed away from other items in your home. Read the directions and follow manufacturer guidelines.

Don’t: Leave them plugged in or on unaccompanied.

Front door.

Do: Add a fun door-hanging decoration to brighten up your community. Decorating your front door is a great way to share your festive personality with your community! Make sure door decorations are allowed in your lease.

Don’t: Block your peephole. You want to make sure you’re able to see who’s knocking on your door!

Christmas tree.

Do: Keep it hydrated (if you have a real tree, of course). With a real tree, keeping it watered regularly will keep it looking great, reduce needle loss and make it less flammable. Make sure it’s in a safe area away from any fire hazards and use flame-retardant decorations, too!

Don't: Cut the tree’s trunk at an angle or v-shape, because it will make it trickier to fit in the stand and reduce the amount of water it can take in.

Holiday lights.

Do: Turn them off and unplug them when not in use. This will reduce the chance of them catching fire.

Don’t: Use nails or tacks to secure them as you’ll risk damaging the cords and causing sparks.

With these dos and don’ts, you’ll have a beautifully decorated apartment home that’s as safe as it is festive.
