If you’re not a natural budgeter, the idea of starting one can feel overwhelming. There are many programs and organizational tools that can help you reach your goals, but sometimes, it’s easier to incorporate small, manageable habits into your routine that will help you save in a big way. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Plan out your groceries. One of the most common things we overspend on is food. Whether that’s from consistently ordering in, going out to eat, or overbuying at the grocery store, it accounts for a large amount of our spending. To combat this, plan your meals out ahead of time and look for sales at your local store. This doesn’t mean you can’t order in or go out anymore, but planning even just a couple of meals a week can help you reach for the fridge instead of your phone. Consider portions when cooking so you can eat leftovers before they go bad.

Set up auto pay. Late fees are an unnecessary expense that are easily avoided by setting up auto pay. Depending on which providers you’re using for your bills, you should be able to set up a payment to withdraw from your account on the day your bill is due. This will help you avoid late fees and give you peace of mind that your bills are taken care of automatically. Just make sure you have enough in the bank to cover what goes out.

Set attainable goals. Oftentimes, we set goals a little too ambitiously, which can cause disappointment if we don’t obtain them quickly, or achieve them at all. Instead, make smaller, more attainable goals that are realistic for you to accomplish. For example, instead of trying to have a no-spend week at the beginning of your budgeting journey, try to find one instance where you would normally spend, and see if you can save by – for example – cooking at home, wearing a shirt you already own, or remembering to peruse the clearance sections when shopping.

Use cash when you can. An easy way to get out of hand with spending is by swiping that credit card. Because it’s not automatically debited from our accounts, it’s easy to swipe without consequence – until the bill comes in. By using cash, you’re able to have a better sense of what you’re spending, and may be able to make better decisions about how, and how much, you spend. Pay credit card bills in full to avoid paying high interest debt.

Start a log of what’s coming in vs. what’s going out. Once you’re comfortable in your new habits, it’s a good idea to start a simple log of what dollars are coming vs. the dollars you’re spending. The trick to success? Don’t over-complicate it. Spreadsheets seem like a lot of work, but they’re simply a visual tool to help you keep track. Don't worry about fancy formulas (unless that’s a fun endeavor for you!) At the end of the day, keeping track will give you a more holistic view of your finances.
