As we are now officially in 2026, it is time to make some resolutions or goals to make the space you rent more of a home. Whether organization and functionality are your main aims or you’re going for decor and ambiance, we will help you come up with some great resolutions.

When it comes to renting, we like to keep our resolutions in 3 categories…

Deep Clean

Decorate

Dollar Bills

Here’s what we suggest!

DEEP CLEANING

Let’s get 2026 off to a good start. Starting with everyone’s favorite thing – deep cleaning! When we say deep cleaning, we mean the things you don’t and wouldn’t do as part of your weekly maintenance of the apartment.

Your Apartment

Think about cleaning in or behind the fridge, or getting to the back of those closets. It is important that you take the time to do this standard maintenance so they do not turn into larger problems down the road.

Clean Curtains, Fans and Out-of-Reach Features

We get it. There is less satisfaction in cleaning the blades of a ceiling fan or washing our curtains, but if you actually look at how much dust has collected, you might be surprised. It only takes a couple of minutes and can make a real difference to how the room feels. Tools like a swiffer duster can help you reach those high features, and don’t forget to dust your blinds and wash your curtains!

Snake the Drain

Not a real snake of course. We are talking about using the long plastic tool with little “teeth” that you can pick up at most hardware or homegood stores. This little tool is a great DIY way to unclog your drains and make sure they are running effectively. Even if you don’t have long, flowy Rapunzel-esque hair, your short strands can still get caught in the drain and cause standing water to occur. Using the snake once a month is a great way to keep your pipes clear. If you do not have a snake, you can also use the tested and true method of baking soda and vinegar. 1 cup of each, in that order and voila. Clean and clear drains!

Safety First

Generally speaking, most of us replace the batteries of our electronics when they stop turning on. But with fire alarms or CO2 detectors, it’s better to be proactive. Often, your landlord will be taking care of those. However, if you’re unsure, it’s a good idea to ask when they were last inspected.

DECORATE

Once you have completed all of your deep cleaning for the year, it is time to add a little extra warmth to your space in the way of decor.

Paintings

Now is the time to add a few new paintings to the wall. The colors and images can provide you with just the lift you need, and they do not have to be expensive. In fact, why not take a night and paint your own?

Plants

Adding a few plants to your space sure can do a lot for your space and your wellbeing. It’s been proven again and again that having nature in the home can help improve your mental and physical health. From their ability to remove toxins from the air to improving sleep patterns, the benefits of adding plants to your space are endless. Plus, they are great to look at.

Furniture

Instead of splurging on brand new items, why not give the furniture a bit of a shuffle? Rearranging your space can bring new perspective and flow to your home, not to mention a free workout. The beauty of this is that you can always move things back if you don’t like the way it turns out. And if you want to go one step further, you could also invest in couch covers or new throw pillows. When it comes to furniture, the small and inexpensive tweaks can be enough to change the way your home feels.

DOLLAR BILLS

We cannot neglect talking about finances as we enter the new year. Starting out with these tips can help your year get off to a great start.

Automatic Rent Payment

With cleaning, out of sight, out of mind is the name of the game. The same can go for paying your rent automatically. If it is deducted at the start of every month from your account, it can be one less thing to worry about. Inquire about whether or not your building accepts automatic payment to see if this could work for you.

Renters Insurance

Are you covered in case of an accident occurring in your apartment? The first of the year is a great time to call and get renter’s insurance, or to check in on your policy. Is the coverage you have still enough for your needs or does another company offer a better rate? Save some money and make sure you are fully protected. In some cases, having renters insurance will be required before you move in.

Savings Apps

We talked about this in our previous blog, but now is a great time to download a budgeting app that helps you stay on top of your finances. From automated savings apps to ones that allow you to create a budget and track spending, now is the time to get ahead of it for a financially healthy new year.

2026 is sure to bring many changes and surprises. But you can ensure that your space is one that is clean and aesthetically pleasing and that your finances are in order by implementing some (or all) of these resolutions. We wish you all a very happy new year!
