This Saturday is Good Neighbor Day! One of our favorite national days. There are so many ways that this pertains to the work we do, whether that’s at the individual level between our residents or at the management level, where it’s important for us to not only think about the specific buildings we manage but where they sit within the wider community. In 40 years of business we have learnt a lot about what it means to be a good neighbor and the effect it can have on our communities. Here’s our top 3 tips on how you can be a good neighbor.

1. Welcome your neighbors to the building

We know that in today’s day and age, most of us exist online and we tend to steer away from face to face contact. The days of knocking on the doors of our neighbors to welcome them to the building are slowly slipping away. However, there are so many ways to welcome your neighbors to the building. Leave them a note, smile in the hallway, make conversation when you walk by them. Even a small gesture can make a world of difference.

2. Maintain shared spaces

If you see something, say something. This one is so often overlooked. Of course each building has a professional or in-house cleaner, but just make sure to be aware of your surroundings. Pick up that piece of trash you dropped when rushing to class. Wipe your shoes in the winter before stepping onto the stairs, and if you see something, say something. Your property managers exist to ensure that you have a positive experience in your apartment home. If there’s more of a mess than usual, or you notice that the standard has been slipping, make sure to reach out to your property manager right away so they can get it taken care of in a timely manner. This will ensure that everyone in the building feels good about their environment!

3. Noise

One of the ways that can have an immediate effect on whether you are being a good neighbor is your level of noise. Whether it’s pets, music, gaming, parties, the TV, fighting. Just adhering to some basic noise etiquette can improve the quality of life of all residents. Of course this will depend on you live. Living in downtown housing in a bustling area will be different to that of a quiet residential neighborhood. But some basics would be not hammering in nails until beyond 8.00 pm at night or mowing the lawn at 6.00 am. Basically, avoid all unnecessary noise between 9.00 pm to 9.00 am.

Being a good neighbor is about so much more than just ‘being neighborly’. When you have people that you know are considerate of you, it creates more of a feeling of community, where residents look out for one another and are content in their homes.
