Brrr, it’s cold outside! There must be something we can do inside to keep ourselves entertained, right? The long, cold, snowy Wisconsin winters can have us feeling like we are forced to stay inside out of fear of turning into a human icicle. But we have crafted a list of some fun and practical tips for living well indoors while Wisconsin “winters” outside.

Warm Up Your Space

Think candles that smell like your favorite winter scent (hello, balsam and evergreen), fuzzy slippers or socks, and a nice cup of a warm beverage. Don’t forget to complete the setup and turn on a fireplace on your TV (they have one on Netflix now!). Getting cozy in your space is a great way to set your mood right and get you excited at the prospect of hunkering down inside for a while. And if you want to kick things back to childhood, build a fort in your living room! We won’t judge you.

Start a New Hobby

There are many great hobbies that can be done indoors. If you have something you know and love that brings you joy – do it! If you are looking to start a new hobby, we have a few suggestions…

Yoga

There are great free options on YouTube and various platforms. Try Yoga with Adriene, for example, who carries out a 30-day challenge through the month of January.

Knitting

It is not just for your grandma – this is becoming much more popular with the younger generations. And you can make some warm items to keep you toasty for when you do have to venture outside.

Baking

Hello chocolate chip cookies and cinnamon rolls. Get inspired by The Great British Bake Off and pick a new recipe to try.

Cooking

Don’t get stuck in a rut. Challenge yourself to try something new, like making homemade pasta, for instance.

Writing

If you feel inspired, get your pen to paper or fingers to a keyboard. Journaling can be a great way to pass the time, or writing a short story if you feel so inclined!

Be a Bartender for a Day

Look up a video on YouTube or buy a recipe book and teach yourself to make your favorite cocktail.

Crafting

Do you want to build a snowman? Why not craft one? This way, you get the satisfaction of the creation while staying dry and warm.

Book Clubs

Take the initiative to get your friends together on Zoom to chat about a book you’re all reading! You could even hold a book swap, where you mail each other a different book that you think they might enjoy.

Learn a New Language

Check out the app Duolingo. Si? Oui! Yes! You are on your way.

Mood Lighting

There is no doubt that even if you are cozy and warm, or discovering a new hobby, the long winter inside can have you feeling a bit down. That is where light comes in. Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as SAD, is very much a reality for many people in the darker months, especially after the lockdowns of 2020. But with the help of light therapy and a good UV light box, working or sitting next to the light for 30-45 minutes can help elevate your mood. It’s always best to check in with your doctor first though, just to make sure.

There is no doubt that winter can make it harder to do the things we enjoy doing outdoors, but there are a lot of things you can bring indoors to help you make it through the darker months. Challenge yourself with goals and new hobbies, and before you know it, you may have learned a new language, knitted a line of scarves or written a book. That is not a bad way to usher in spring.
