In an apartment home, a minimalist lifestyle makes perfect sense, especially if you’re in a studio or a smaller apartment home, but any renter can achieve it.

So what is a minimalist lifestyle? While some think it’s just throwing away all of your belongings, it actually means living intentionally and deciding what is and isn't essential, so you can spend more time doing what you love.

In today’s blog, we’ll cover some ways you can achieve this lifestyle in your apartment home.

Determine what’s important to you. The first step in a minimalist lifestyle is determining what is most important to you. This will help you choose which items you need to keep and what you can do away with. There will be things that are vital to your day-to-day life, or items you have a serious connection with that you should absolutely keep, but there are ways to determine what you might want to get rid of as well.

Get rid of clutter or unnecessary items. If there are items you haven’t used or worn in months or even years, it’s probably a safe bet that you won’t be using them again any time soon, so you can toss them. Start small in places like medicine cabinets or closets, then move on to larger items and spaces. You’d be surprised at the items you don’t use!

Every item should have a home. A huge part of a successful minimalist lifestyle is being intentional, especially with your belongings. By making sure each item has a home or a place where it belongs, it will be dual-purpose in helping you determine if it’s actually something you need to keep and will provide clarity when you ask if you have too much clutter for your space.

Purchase smart and high quality. Just because it’s called “minimalist” doesn’t mean that you can’t buy anything ever again! The difference is in the term “minimalist lifestyle”. This refers to those who tend to shop to replace, not to add, and they make sure to only purchase high quality items so as not to require multiple replacements over time. No impulse shopping here – but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy purchasing new items, as long as they serve a purpose.

Opt for reusable items. Think about how many items you purchase are single use and get thrown out constantly. If you swap over to a minimalist lifestyle, investing in reusable items will limit the amount of waste you have and free up space in your home. By purchasing this way, you actually won’t have to buy as much and you’ll find you need less in the long run.

There are so many benefits to a minimalist lifestyle. From providing more peace in your life, focusing more on relationships and less on things, removing clutter from your physical and mental space, increasing creativity, potentially helping you financially and the environment and more… Practicing minimalism not only impacts you but the space and people around you. We hope this encourages you to incorporate some minimalist practices into your routine!
