We all wish our apartment homes could be adorned with the newest furniture at the snap of our fingers, but the reality is it may not be possible depending on both your budget and what’s available to you, especially with recent events putting manufacturing so far behind.

What we can do, however, is give our existing furniture a makeover instead of giving up on it. Today’s blog will cover some of the best ways you can revamp some of the most popular furniture items and types.

Couch. Our couches are likely the most loved item of furniture we all own. From personal lounging to hosting guests, couches are really a staple in the home, which makes them more likely to need some extra attention. If you can’t remember the last time you cleaned your couch, you’ll want to make sure you give it a thorough clean. Apartment Therapy does a great job at providing a how-to guide to spruce up your sofa, with quick tips like flipping cushions! Alternatively, you could explore cushion covers as an option to really renew the look of your couch.

Wood items. Are your wooden pieces of furniture looking a little dull? The good news is that it’s so easy to give your wooden pieces a new lease on life. If you want to totally transform these pieces, you can strip and refinish them, then paint or stain them to give them an entirely new personality. If the piece is in generally good condition but could use some love, simply oiling or polishing it can make it look brand new. Plus, add in a new knob or handle if applicable for some new flair to match the rest of your apartment home decor.

Leather items. Leather may seem a little scary, but it doesn’t have to be! According to Apartment Therapy, you can clean your leather furniture with a combination of lemon juice and cream of tartar – two ingredients you likely already have in your home – and then condition it with a solution found at your local hardware store.

Metal items. A polished metal accent can make a world of difference when it comes to your furniture. First, give your metal items a good clean to get rid of any rust or tarnishing. Then use a finishing spray from a local hardware store for a fresh finish that will leave your metal pieces sparkling.

When in doubt, paint it! Anything can feel new with a fresh coat of paint – including your furniture! Whether it’s vinyl, leather, or wood, you can paint these items to give them a new life and have them better match your aesthetic. Just make sure to use the appropriate paint for each different type of material and follow manufacturer instructions.

However you approach it, you can achieve an awesome new look with a little elbow grease and inspiration to find the perfect furniture upgrades for you. Happy DIY-ing!
