Your Guide to Moving Apartments this Winter

  |     |   Renters Tips

Is moving apartments in the cards for you this winter? Today’s blog is here to help! While winter isn’t the most popular season for moving (typically, mid-May through mid-September is peak moving time), you may find that your circumstance requires you to move during the chilly winter months, or you found a great offer you couldn’t pass up. Regardless of the reason, there are some tips you should know before you make your move. Keep reading for more!

Keep a close eye on the weather forecasts. It goes without saying that winter weather (especially in Wisconsin!) can be unpredictable. In fact, this winter is predicted to be stormy, cold, and full of snow, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. That means you should keep a close eye on the weather forecast to plan your move appropriately, so you don’t get caught unprepared in the worst of a snowstorm or other challenging winter weather conditions.

Know which of your belongings can withstand the cold temperatures. While we may be used to the drop in temperature, some of our belongings are not. Electronic devices, ice makers, certain mattresses, glass, and other fragile items are susceptible to damage when exposed to extreme cold. Take extra precautions by unassembling, carefully wrapping, and then securing your items for your travels. It’ll require a little extra work when unpacking, but your belongings will thank you for it.

Use old towels or blankets to clean snow, ice, and salt. Depending on the forecast from previous days, you may be trekking through snow, ice, or salt during your move – things you definitely don’t want to bring into your new apartment home! Before you toss old towels or blankets, use them as a barrier between your shoes and your new floors to keep your new home clean from the elements. From there, you can do a quick clean-up by getting rid of the blankets or towels or throwing them in the laundry. Re-using and keeping clean – it’s a win-win!
