1. Reach out to your property manager to find out if you need to complete any additional paperwork. Many apartment buildings will ask you for a pet deposit as well as an additional monthly pet fee. These will vary in price depending on your specific building and type or size of pet so touch base with your manager for details.
2. Get yourself a giant lint roller. No, really. Whether we like it or not, if you are getting a cat or a dog there’s no way to escape the fur tumbleweeds that get stuck to your furniture. Giant lint rollers are a life saver! You can buy refillable ones at Target or Menards for around $20.
3. Did you know that cats can open cabinets? Yes it’s true. One trick we recommend for our renters is to buy childlocks as they work just as well for your pets as your babies. If you have a fur baby who likes to crawl and hide in your cabinets, this is one sure way to keep them away from your pots and pans.
4. Cultivate spaces for THEM. I’m not talking about anything drastic such as going out and buying a pet stroller (it’s a real thing, as is a cat backpack…who knew!?), but make sure that they have their own space, for example your dog should have its own bed and cats have somewhere they can climb up high and hide away in. They will also need a basket/box for their toys.
