A Guide to Using Community Spaces

  |     |   Renters Tips

One of the biggest perks of apartment living is the community amenities. This could include pools, fitness centers, clubhouses, basketball courts, and more. But it’s important to know the best practices when using those spaces. In today’s blog, we’ll cover what a community space is and how to best utilize them.

What is a community space?

A community space within an apartment building or apartment community is a gathering space where residents can come together either just to gather or to enjoy some type of activity. These spaces are reserved for only residents and their guests, and are typically not open to the public. In most cases, use of these spaces is included in your rental payment and does not come at an additional cost. You’ll be able to find out what community spaces are available to you within your building’s amenities section.

Since these spaces are available to all members of your community, it’s a good rule of thumb to practice being a good neighbor and be mindful of others. While there are some tips that are specific to certain spaces, here are some that are applicable across all:

  1. Clean up after yourself

After you’ve wrapped up your time in the shared space, it’s necessary to pick up your belongings and make sure any mess you’ve made is cleaned up prior to the next person coming in. This will not only ensure cleanliness across the entire space, but also ensures none of your belongings get misplaced or stolen and will earn you the respect of your neighbors.

  1. Be mindful of sharing time with other residents

All residents want to take advantage of the great offerings of the building. If your community space isn’t large enough to accommodate many people at once, you should be mindful of how much time you use it for or consider discussing a schedule program with your community. It’s no fun arguing with others or feeling like you can’t use a space since someone else is always in it.

  1. Be kind to others also using the space with you

If the space is large enough for multiple parties to enjoy, it’s important to make others feel welcome. By definition, a community space is a space for multiple people to gather, so making it a pleasant spot is the responsibility of all who use it.

For amenities that aren’t as common, such as movie theaters, libraries, coworking rooms, exercise areas, etc., the above tips stand true and there are some extra steps, such as returning equipment, reserving the space with consideration for others, and being a good sharer.

By following these tips, your community experience will be a great one. You’ll be able to enjoy using those amenities and make friends along the way. It will be beneficial to all who use the space and really define what it means to be a community. Enjoy!
