Managing Your Energy Bill: Tips for Saving Money and Staying Comfortable

  |     |   Renters Tips

As we approach spring, managing your finances becomes even more important—especially when it comes to energy bills. We all want to stay comfortable without breaking the bank, so this week on the blog, we’ll share some practical tips for saving money while keeping your home cozy.

1. Use heaters and fans wisely

Heaters and fans can be a real lifesaver during the colder or warmer months, but it’s important to use them wisely. Instead of heating your entire home, try using a heater in just the room you're in for short periods – this approach is both safer and more cost-effective. Make sure to clean any heaters you use regularly so they function at their most efficient level. When the warmer months arrive, consider fans to circulate air from an open window better. They are a great alternative to blasting the AC.

2. Seal any drafts and insulate

Another way to remain efficient is to seal any drafts you may have. Once you have identified the draft, use draft stoppers for below doors or around windows. If you notice anything more significant, make sure to reach out to your property team.

3. Laundry – use cold washes, air-dry clothes

If you have in-unit laundry, completing your laundry in a cold wash can help keep your energy bills low. There are also a number of other benefits, including helping to preserve your clothes' fabric and helping to stop colors fading! A cold wash is typically considered anything below 30 degrees. So a wash at 20 degrees or 30 degrees would be best for your energy bill.

4. Unplug devices when not in use

Remember to unplug any appliances and devices when you are not using them. From your TV and games consoles, to any lights or devices you have plugged in. Leaving devices on standby still uses energy and can add up over time.

5. Use energy-efficient light bulbs

Energy-efficient bulbs can also save you a significant amount of money. They may be a little more expensive from the outset, but over the course of their life, energy-saving bulbs could save you over $80.

There are many more ways in which you can save money on your energy bills and be more efficient around your home! Share with us in the comments your best saving methods!
