How To Be A Good Neighbor

  |     |   Renters Tips

A home is more than just a building; it’s also the people and the community that make it special. None of this is possible without neighbors. This Good Neighbor Day, we are exploring different ways that you can show up for your neighbors to make your spaces feel more like home.

Welcome New Neighbors

Every good neighbor once began as a stranger. If your community has newcomers, even the smallest act of kindness can make a difference. Whether it be bringing over a meal, offering to help unpack, giving a tour of the neighborhood, or just introducing yourself, each interaction will make their new space feel more like home.

Be Mindful

Living in community means being considerate of others in big and small ways. If you are listening to music on a speaker, make sure to put it at a reasonable volume to avoid disturbing your neighbors. When you have visitors, provide clear parking instructions, and give your neighbors a heads up. It’s best to mow the lawn or conduct similar activities during the day when neighbors are awake. Shared spaces like hallways and yards should also be kept tidy. Considerations like these will help you to continue living in harmony.

Manage Pets

Streets and yards are shared spaces. As much as your neighbors may love your pets, it’s important to clean up after them. Building your pets a space where they are secure and feel comfortable will also help reduce barking and unnecessary wandering.

Communication

Your neighbors won’t know your preferences unless you communicate. It’s important to state any concerns directly and respectfully first, to try to reach an agreement. If someone raises an issue or concern, listen first and respond thoughtfully. This will allow you to better understand their expectations, and your neighbors will understand how to make you feel more comfortable.

Following these tips will do more than just keep your living spaces at peace; it may also turn a stranger into a neighbor and into a friend.
