How to Clean Out Your Apartment

  |     |   Renters Tips

Did you know July 15th is National Give Something Away Day? If you’ve found that your apartment home has felt more cluttered than usual recently, it’s the perfect time to clean out your apartment and start fresh. Here are a few places you can get started.

Start with your closet. The easiest place to hoard items is your closet. A good rule of thumb is if you haven’t worn an item in a year, it’s time to get rid of it. Now, there are some articles of clothing that can be an exception, if they’re sentimental to you, for example. But, generally speaking, clothing in good condition that you just don’t wear anymore can be donated to local charities or organizations who can put them to use for those in need.

Review your book collection. While books and clothing are a little bit different, they’re a great item to donate to local libraries if you’ve concluded your journey with them. If you don’t plan on reading your books or magazines ever again, donating them to local libraries is a great way to share the joy of reading for those who may not have access to the books in your collection. Plus, it will make you feel happy knowing that someone else is able to experience one of your favorite books because you donated it.

Don’t forget about your pantry. If your pantry is feeling a little too full, it’s probably time to sort through it. Look through your pantry for any non-perishable food items you don't need or want. Things like canned vegetables or proteins, unopened crackers, seeds, or grains, granola bars and more are excellent items to donate to your local food bank. Just make sure these items are within the expiration date and unopened for food safety.

Start collecting any spare change. Although this may sound opposite to cleaning out your apartment and giving something away, collect any spare change that you may find in between the couch cushions or in odd places in your apartment home to donate to your favorite charity. Once you’ve collected a sizable amount, you’ll be able to make a difference in others’ lives just from what you were able to find in your apartment.

Hold onto your expired coupons. Did you know that expired coupons can be sent to military families overseas? Although technically expired, military bases overseas accept expired coupons up to 6 months past the expiration date. These coupons are so helpful for those families who rely on them during their time away from home, and you’ll be able to help someone get these deals past when you actually can. For more information and the address to send these coupons to, visit https://www.couponcabin.com/troops/

With these tips, you’ll be cleaning out your apartment and you’ll be doing good for others in your community. Although we’re highlighting National Give Something Away Day, try to incorporate these practices into your lifestyle every few months to make sure you're not hoarding unnecessary clutter in your home.
