Tips for Budgeting

  |     |   Renters Tips

If you find the task of keeping track of your money overwhelming, now is a great time to create (or revise) your budget. Luckily, budgeting isn't difficult to implement, it just requires some planning and dedication. Here are some tips to help you along the way

The first step is knowing what money comes in and what goes out each month.
This will help you determine which expenses could be cut or if any additional income is needed. While it may feel daunting to compile a list of all of the things you pay for, it is beneficial in deciding how to move forward with your finances. If you’re not sure where to start, pull up your bank statement and jot down the names of each bill.

Find a monthly budget plan that suits you.
There are several ways to structure your budget based on your financial goals. Budget plans like the 50/30/20 method, the envelope system, the zero-based budget and the pay-yourself-first budget are all popular options. Some of these plans follow simple templates which you can find for free online or you can spend more time researching budgeting experts to guide you through your process. Or, there are free apps you can use which will track your spending automatically.

Always leave room in your budget for unexpected events.
Make sure you budget for birthday gifts, holidays, and vacations, so you have enough time to plan these expenses. You can easily do this by adding a “special occassion” category to your budget. And if you don’t have any special occasions in a particular month, you can carry over that amount into the next month.

Continuously track your budget.
Once you get used to knowing how much money you have to spend each month, you’ll know how you can spend every time you go grocery shopping or have an impromptu brunch with friends. To get started, look at your spending in each category at the end of each week, and adjust as needed for the following week.

Adjust your budget regularly.
It’s important to note your budget is fluid and can always be adjusted to match your lifestyle. It might be a little time-consuming to begin with, but once you’ve revised your budget a few times, you will be able to allocate your funds more quickly.

Set up auto-payments.
By setting up auto-payments, you can free yourself from worrying about late fees. You can set up these payments for anything from your rent to your streaming services.

Although budgeting can feel like a lot of work in the beginning, once you have the hang of it, you’ll find peace of mind in knowing that you’re spending within your means while saving for the future.
